Addlestone
in the First World War
AHS is researching the names on the memorial gates at Victory Park - Addlestone's
civic memorial to the First World War. The memorial has 142 names inscribed
on the portland stone pillars. As well as compiling details specific to the
casualty list we are also collecting material relating to the war in general.
The project has been ongoing for some years and is now nearing completion. Jim
Knight would welcome both enquiries and the receipt of any related information
from visitors to this website. Jim can be contacted by email on j_jknight2@btinternet.com

Crouch
Oak Tree book published
Pam
Brush's book The Crouch Oak Tree, which brings together the results of
our historical research into the stories and legends about the tree and the
scientific investigations into its age, is now published. Some background historical
material has also been included - have you ever wondered when the water-closet
was invented or where quinine comes from? The book also contains several interesting
illustrations, some in colour, including the earliest known picture of the Crouch
Oak, a charming water-colour painted by John Hassell in 1822. The Crouch
Oak Tree costs £3.95 and is available from Pam on 01932-872560.
